While harmless, hyperpigmentation is extremely annoying. It’s caused by an increase of melanin in the skin. Though we all have melanin, the reasons for individual hyperpigmentation can vary. For some, it’s sun exposure without protection. (Remember, we wrote an entire story on skin cancer and why everyone needs to protect themselves?) For others, hormones, natural influences and inflammation are the culprit. For me? Pesky acne breakouts are behind my scarring and dark spots.

Most dermatologists recommend using products made with vitamin C, azelaic acid, mandelic acid or niacinamide (vitamin B-3) to help treat hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

If you can’t get to your dermatologist right now, but still want to get to work on reducing the appearance of dark spots, you’ll be happy to know acne-related hyperpigmentation is fixable even while we’re all at home. Check out the curated selection of products below that help with hyperpigmentation.
